Chapter Fifty-Five

“Want to tell me why we’re here?” Amelia asked, sitting on the silver Ford Explorer’s hood. She was behaving as though she wanted to be elsewhere, but her curious gaze didn’t roam from the horrific sight ahead of her.

“Because,” Evie said, “you’ll have to get used to this kind of thing. Notice the large crowds, the countless authorities, and my dear brother being let under the yellow tape? These are the ingredients for a bloody murder scene, and it should give off a certain vibe.”

“Yeah, it does. An uncomfortable one.”

Evie smiled and slid off the car, cracking her back as she stretched high and wide. A small grin of satisfaction appeared on her mouth, but she hid it from her daughter. The whole point of this visit was to show her something that would put her off wanting to be a crime journalist. It was just a shame she couldn’t offer a close-up of the hanging woman.

“Does any of this seem familiar?” Amelia asked.

“Some of it. Locations and patterns.”

“I read up about it, you know.”

Evie shot her a sideways glance but said nothing. She knew.

“Your extended piece about the Lullaby Killer was super interesting. I learned a lot. The only thing I’m uncertain of is that you said he threatened you.”

“And?” Evie asked.

“I just wondered why you never came to warn me.”

“I did.”

Amelia pulled a strange face of misunderstanding.

“I dropped by the house and spoke to your mom, right before she asked me to leave. You would have been about thirteen back then, and I had no right to interfere.”

“Well, I don’t remember it.”

They turned back to the scene and watched in silence as a group of silhouettes eased the hanging woman off the curtain rail. Seeing a person treated like an object always left an unwelcome taste in Evie’s mouth. She didn’t think she would ever get used to it. All she could hope for now was that Amelia would feel the same, and it would put her off the job.
